Final Illustrations

This is Einstein waiting for the bus. It took FAR TOO LONG to say I was going to be doing 6, so I decided to change my idea to create an Einstein Paper doll...here's the final thing and some of his snazzy outfits:

In total, he has 5 tops, 3 bottoms and 1 pair of shoes (because he didn't like to wear shoes so why would he have more?!) I'm pleased with it if I'm honest.

Nice Things: Marc Johns

Do I even need to say the reasons I like Marc Johns because really it should be painfully obvious - he's funny, simplistic style and its watercolour!!!!!!!

Illustration Project: Week 1

Decided that for this project I'm going to do a week by week thing. So this is my first week from Tuesday 13th to Tuesday 20th....

On that Tuesday, we had a guided studio session where words were thrown at us and we had between  6 - 10 minutes to draw each word. The ones I've decided to keep in my sketchbook were: somewhere from home (I chose the park), a fry up, holiday memories, your bedroom, afternoon tea, fairy tale castle and a bike. Done some close ups of my favourite ones - 3 guesses as to what my favourite media is.

Then we were to chose from a list of themes to base our whole project on, and rather than go for Fashion or Films which I was drawn too, I chose to go for Famous People, in particular Albert Einstein...just cuz he has crazy hair and a moustache. I rarely draw men so thought he was a good starting point as he had an interesting life, some interesting quirks and characteristics. These were just quick drawings based on his love of the violin and his pipe.

Then I illustrated good ol' Albie. Aint he cute. You've got presentable Albert, Cardigan Albert, Jumper Albert and Sailor Albert...cuz he likes sailing! Wahey.

Then I whacked him into Photoshop. I think I prefer the watercolour version, just because it looks friendlier. He looks a bit boring all block coloury.

Oh where will next week take us oh ho ho.......

Nice Things: Alex T Smith

Alex T Smith is one of my favourite children's illustrators probably ever. His work fills me with such childish glee, his characters are so happy and full of personality. His work is probably one of my biggest influences stylistically because aaagh its just soooo cute. It's weird because in terms of Graphic Design, I prefer things being really bold, blocky and sleek where as in illustration i love texture, pattern and an overall busy look to an image.

Nice Things: Ashley Percival

I can't handle these illustrations. I love the colours, the naiveté, the subjects.
Guys, its a fox. on a bike. with glasses. and a moustache. Come on!
